Championship Auto Racing Auxiliary

Championship Auto Racing Auxiliary (CARA) was founded in 1981 to serve the professional auto racing community through charitable work and to promote the friendships of those involved in the motorsports family.

CARA Charities occupies a special place in the motorsports community. Since its founding, CARA has donated more than $4 million dollars to dozens of philanthropic causes helping children, hospitals, scholarship funds, ministries and numerous charitable foundations.

CARA is about community. It is the racing family giving of itself, not only in dollars but also in contributions of self. Over the course of the year, members have frequent volunteer opportunities to work and make an impact on the lives of others. Combined with the dedicated support of its sponsors and the racing community, CARA enters its second quarter century of giving as a leading motorsports charity.

CARA is about hope and encouragement. Individuals can make a difference. There is nothing stronger than the power of people working together. CARA members believe that life has purpose in giving. Shirley Chisholm, who was officially recognized for her Outstanding Work in the Field of Child Welfare, used to say that “service is the rent you pay for room on this earth.”

CARA is the embodiment of this belief.

Fashion Show 2008

The 27th annual Fashion Show and Luncheon in the grand ballroom at the Marriott Hotel was a huge success! Team Penske’s Helio Castroneves opened the show sporting his bright yellow suit from his championship winning “Dancing With the Stars” performance. He was followed by several drivers, including Oriol Servia, Will Power, Bruno Junqueira, and Milka Duno.

Local media personalities, community leaders and a cross-section of the “beautiful” people who gather for the Indy 500 also took to the runway sporting fashions from Secret Ingredient, Raleigh Menswear Limited and Teeter Totter.

Honored guests Lyn St. James, Janet Guthrie and Cody Unser added to the spectacular day. This year’s gala raised some $60,000 that will be used to support charities that focus on helping children. Recipients for 2008 are The Riley Children’s Fund at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis as well as the Cody Unser First Step Foundation, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to raising research funds, public awareness and quality of life for those afflicted with all forms of spinal cord- related paralysis. CARA’s own “Buckle Up Baby” program also received support from the event.
